Meesho SKU ID: What It Is and a Naming Format That Scales

A SKU ID (stock keeping unit) is the code you give each product variant
when you list it on Meesho, so you can tell your products apart in orders, labels,
returns and stock. Meesho prints it on every shipping label, which means a good
SKU tells you exactly what to pick from the shelf without opening the order. A
simple format like CATEGORY-STYLE-COLOUR-SIZE, for example KUR-014-BLU-M,
works for one listing and still works at two hundred.
Most new sellers type the product name or a random number into the SKU field and regret it the first busy morning. This guide shows how to set it up once and never think about it again.
Why the SKU matters more than it looks
The SKU is the only part of an order that is entirely in your control, and it turns up everywhere:
- On the shipping label. The small product table on every Meesho label shows the SKU, size and quantity. That is what you read while packing.
- When sorting labels. Our free label cropper groups labels by SKU so every order of one product is packed in one go. That only works if each product has one consistent SKU.
- On returns. When a parcel comes back, the SKU tells you which product, colour and size it was, without guessing from a photo.
- In reports. Payment and order reports list SKUs. Clear ones make it obvious which products earn and which ones mostly come back.
A product named "Beautiful Rayon Kurti For Women" in the SKU field is unreadable
on a label at 7 in the morning. KUR-014-BLU-M is not.
A naming format that scales
Use four short parts, joined by hyphens, in the same order every time:
| Part | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Category | Two or three letters for the product type | KUR kurti, SAR saree, TSH t-shirt, BED bedsheet |
| Style number | Your own design or supplier number | 014 |
| Colour | Two or three letters | BLU, BLK, MRN (maroon) |
| Size | The size as it appears on the label | S, M, L, XL, FREE |
So the same kurti in three sizes becomes:
KUR-014-BLU-SKUR-014-BLU-MKUR-014-BLU-L
And when the same design comes in green, only one part changes: KUR-014-GRN-M.
Rules that keep it working
- One SKU per sellable variant. Every colour and size combination you stock separately gets its own SKU.
- Never reuse a SKU for a different product, even after the old one is discontinued. Old orders and returns still carry it.
- Capital letters, numbers and hyphens only. No spaces, no special characters, no emoji. They print cleanly and sort predictably.
- Pad the style number to the same length (
007, not7), soKUR-007sorts beforeKUR-014instead of after it. - Keep it short. The label has a narrow column for it. If it does not fit at a glance, it is too long.
- Write the format down and use the same one on Meesho, Flipkart, Amazon and your own stock sheet.
Common mistakes
Using the product title. Long, inconsistent, and different words for the same thing on different days.
Random numbers. 47382 means nothing on a label. You end up opening the order
to find out what it is.
The same SKU for every size. Then the label cannot tell you which size to pack, and size mix-ups become returns.
Supplier codes alone. Two suppliers can use the same code for completely different products. Add your own category prefix.
Changing the format halfway. Reports and label sorting split the same product into two groups. Pick the format before you scale, not after.
How the SKU speeds up packing
With a clean format, a morning batch sorted by SKU comes out in a natural order: all the kurtis together, by design, then by colour, then by size. You pull one design from the shelf, pack every size of it, and move on.
- Download the day's labels from the Supplier Panel.
- Drop them into the Meesho label cropper and group by product (SKU).
- Print, then pack product by product.
The full routine, including thermal and A4 printing, is in how to print Meesho labels, and the checks to do at the packing table are in how to pack Meesho orders.
SKUs and bulk upload
When you move from single listings to bulk upload, the SKU column is where consistency pays off. Build the SKUs in your sheet with a formula rather than typing them: put category, style, colour and size in separate columns and join them, so a typo cannot creep in. The rest of the bulk-upload system, from master sheets to title formulas, is in from 20 to 200 listings.
A simple stock sheet built on SKUs
You do not need software to start. One sheet with these columns is enough:
| SKU | Product | Colour | Size | In stock | Supplier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KUR-014-BLU-M | Rayon kurti, style 14 | Blue | M | 12 | Supplier A |
Update the "In stock" column after each packing session. Because the SKU on the label matches the SKU in the sheet, counting what went out takes a minute.
FAQ
What is a SKU ID on Meesho?
It is your own code for a product variant, entered when you list it. Meesho shows it on orders, labels and reports so you can identify exactly which product, colour and size was ordered.
Meesho SKU ID kya hota hai?
SKU ID aapka apna code hai jo aap har product ke har size aur colour ko dete ho. Ye shipping label par print hota hai, isliye achha SKU dekh kar hi pata chal jaata hai ki shelf se kaunsa product uthana hai. Jaise KUR-014-BLU-M matlab kurti, design 14, blue, medium.
Can two products have the same SKU?
They should not. Give every sellable variant its own SKU and never reuse one for a different product, or orders, returns and stock will get mixed up.
Should the SKU include the size?
Yes, if you stock sizes separately. Otherwise the label cannot tell you which size to pack, and wrong-size parcels turn into returns.
Can I use the same SKU on Meesho, Amazon and Flipkart?
Yes, and it is a good idea. One SKU for one physical product across every platform keeps your stock sheet simple.
What if I already listed products with messy SKUs?
Start the clean format for every new listing today, and keep a small table that maps old SKUs to new ones. Avoid changing many live listings at once, which splits your reports in the middle of a month.
