Meesho Penalties (2026): What You Are Actually Charged
By Vanshika - ecommerce seller & educator, @chitraabyvanshika (100,000+ followers)
Meesho publishes two different answers to the question "do sellers get penalised", and both are on its own website.
The pricing page tells sellers there are zero penalties for cancellations, and to sell without worrying about them. The shipping page repeats it. But Meesho's own learning hub has a lesson on handling penalties, and it names three by name: a supplier cancellation penalty, an auto cancellation penalty, and a direct shipping penalty of ₹5,000.
Same company, same website, opposite answers. This article explains what is actually going on, what each penalty is, and what to do when one appears on your settlement.
The contradiction, precisely
Three official Meesho pages:
| Page | What it says |
|---|---|
| Pricing | Meesho charges zero penalties for supplier and auto cancellations. Sellers can operate without fear of cancellation penalties. |
| Shipping | Where delays are outside your control and cause late dispatch or cancellation, no penalty is charged. |
| Learning hub | Names a Supplier Cancellation Penalty, an Auto Cancellation Penalty, and a ₹5,000 Direct Shipping Penalty. |
The most likely reading is that the marketing pages describe the intended position while the learning hub describes the operational reality, and one of them has not been updated. We do not know which.
What that means for you is simple and unhelpful: do not rely on either page. Read your own settlement. Every deduction appears in the order-level breakdown under Payments in your Supplier Panel. That is the only source that describes your account.
The penalties Meesho itself names
Direct shipping penalty - ₹5,000
The only penalty Meesho publishes a number for, and by far the largest.
If you receive an order through Meesho and then ship it to that customer directly, outside the platform, the stated consequence is a ₹5,000 charge and possible account deactivation, temporary or permanent.
Sellers usually do this thinking they are saving the shipping fee. The maths is not close: you save perhaps ₹65 and risk ₹5,000 plus the account itself.
Supplier cancellation penalty
Charged when you cancel an order you have already been given. Meesho's position in the learning hub is that dispatch is mandatory once an order arrives.
Regardless of the amount, cancelling is the most damaging thing a seller can do to their own account - it affects visibility far more than a late dispatch does. That is covered in Meesho account health.
Auto cancellation penalty
Triggered when a shipment is not dispatched by the day after its expected dispatch date, and the system cancels it for you.
This is the same failure as above, arriving by a different route. The prevention is identical: accurate stock counts, and never accepting an order you cannot ship.
The amounts nobody can verify
Search for Meesho penalty amounts and you will find confident, specific, and mutually incompatible figures.
One site states a ₹50 late dispatch penalty and ₹25 per seller cancellation. Another describes quality penalties at 10-15% of order value plus logistics. Others say only that a flat penalty applies per item, or that the amount depends on the order and current policy.
They cannot all be right. Several are clearly copying each other, and at least one is publishing precision that its own source does not support.
We are not adding another number to that pile. What we can tell you:
- ₹5,000 for direct shipping is published by Meesho and is the one figure with a clear source.
- Every other amount is either unpublished or disputed between sources.
- Amounts and thresholds get revised, so even a correct figure ages.
Open Payments, then the order-level breakdown, and read your own recoveries line. Thirty seconds of that beats any article, including this one.
Charges are not penalties, and the difference matters
This distinction is worth internalising because it changes what you can do about a deduction.
Charges are the agreed price of selling: shipping, 18% GST on fees, reverse shipping when a customer returns something. They scale with volume, they are predictable, and disputing them is pointless. Every one is broken down in Meesho seller fees explained.
Penalties are conditional. They fire because of an event - a missed cut-off, a cancellation, a quality threshold. Which means two things charges do not offer:
- They are preventable, because they are triggered by operations you control.
- They are appealable, when applied for something that was not your fault.
A seller who cannot tell the two apart on a settlement treats everything as fixed cost, and quietly pays fines that were avoidable.
Appealing a penalty you should not have
Meesho's learning hub has a lesson specifically on handling incorrect penalties, which tells you the appeal path exists. Use it.
What makes an appeal winnable:
- Raise it quickly. Windows are short across every dispute type on the platform.
- Evidence, not argument. Courier pickup records, manifest timestamps, panel screenshots showing dispatch on time.
- One specific claim. "This penalty is wrong because the courier did not arrive on the scheduled date" beats a general complaint about fairness.
- Check the outcome in the compensation and recoveries section rather than assuming it went through.
And the same rule that applies to return claims applies here: do not appeal everything. Filing weak disputes in bulk gets you ignored on the ones that matter.
Preventing the ones that are your fault
Almost every avoidable penalty traces to one root cause: stock counts that do not match reality. You accept an order you cannot ship, and every bad outcome follows.
The weekly routine that prevents it:
- Zero out anything you cannot ship, the moment it runs out. Not later.
- Clear the pending queue daily, not in a weekend batch.
- Hand over to the courier before the cut-off, not after packing.
- Never ship a Meesho order directly. ₹5,000 and the account.
- If you are going away, use holiday mode properly - the sequence is in how to take leave on Meesho.
And the rule that matters most when you are short on time: dispatch late rather than cancel. Late is a mark. Cancelling is a much bigger one, and may carry a charge as well.
The document tools
For direct and wholesale orders you raise your own paperwork. The free packing slip generator and GST invoice generator handle both, and the merge and split PDF tools tidy up bulk downloads before printing.
FAQ
Does Meesho charge penalties to sellers?
Meesho's own pages disagree. The pricing and shipping pages state there are no penalties for cancellations or late dispatch outside your control. The learning hub names a supplier cancellation penalty, an auto cancellation penalty and a ₹5,000 direct shipping penalty. Check your own order-level payment breakdown rather than relying on either.
What is the Meesho direct shipping penalty?
₹5,000, plus possible temporary or permanent account deactivation, for shipping an order received through Meesho directly to the customer outside the platform. It is the only penalty amount Meesho publishes.
Meesho penalty se kaise bache?
Sabse badi wajah galat stock count hai. Jo product available nahi hai uska stock turant zero karo, pending orders roz clear karo, aur courier ko cut-off se pehle handover karo. Aur sabse zaroori - Meesho ka order kabhi bhi direct customer ko mat bhejo, uspar ₹5,000 ka penalty hai.
How much is the Meesho cancellation penalty?
Meesho names a supplier cancellation penalty in its learning hub but does not publish the amount, and third-party sources give conflicting figures. Treat any specific number you read online as unverified and check your own recoveries line instead.
Can I appeal a Meesho penalty?
Yes. Meesho has a documented process for incorrect penalties. Raise it quickly, attach evidence such as courier pickup records or panel screenshots, and make one specific claim rather than a general complaint. Check the recoveries section for the outcome.
Is a late dispatch worse than cancelling an order?
No - cancelling is worse. Late dispatch is a mark against your account. Cancelling an order you accepted breaks the promise Meesho made to the buyer on your behalf, damages account health more, and may carry a charge. If you are running out of time, ship late.
Where do penalties show on my settlement?
Under Payments, in the order-level breakdown, usually within recoveries. Read one real order rather than assuming your settlement matches your sales figure.
Every deduction, penalty and charge that touches a Meesho settlement is covered in the Meesho A-Z Course, and you can model your real profit in the free Meesho profit calculator.
