To register as a Flipkart seller you need a GSTIN, PAN, a bank account and a pickup address. Sign up at seller.flipkart.com, enter your GST details, list at least one product, and the account usually activates within one to two days. Registration is free. You then pay roughly 8% commission on average, a fixed fee of around ₹15, shipping of around ₹45, and 18% GST on all of it. Here is the whole process with real numbers.

Is Flipkart worth it for a new seller?

Flipkart sits between Meesho and Amazon. Higher buyer trust and higher price tolerance than Meesho, less competition than Amazon in many categories. For sellers in fashion, home and electronics accessories it is the most underrated of the big three.

If you are below roughly ₹400 a product, Meesho's 0% commission usually wins. Above that, Flipkart starts making more sense.

Documents you need

  1. GSTIN, mandatory for taxable categories, which is almost everything. No GSTIN yet? We register it for ₹999, or you can apply free on the government portal.
  2. PAN card
  3. Bank account plus a cancelled cheque
  4. Mobile number and email
  5. Pickup address details

Unlike Meesho, there is no way around the GST requirement here. If you want to test selling before registering for GST, start on Meesho instead, using the Enrolment ID route.

Registration walkthrough

  1. Go to seller.flipkart.com and click Start Selling
  2. Enter your mobile number, verify the OTP, add your email
  3. Enter your GSTIN. Business details auto-populate, so check the name matches your GST certificate exactly
  4. Add your pickup address
  5. Add bank account details
  6. List at least one product. Flipkart requires a live listing to activate the account
  7. Complete the onboarding and verification steps

Activation usually takes one to two days once documents verify. As on Amazon, a mismatched business name is the most common holdup, so make your application name match the GST certificate letter for letter.

Flipkart's fee structure with real maths

Three deductions per order, plus GST on all of them:

FeeTypical amount
CommissionAround 8% average, varies by category and price band
Fixed or closing feeAround ₹15, varies by price band
Shipping feeAround ₹45 for standard weight, varies by zone
GST on fees18% on the above

Worked example on a product selling at ₹400:

LineAmount
Selling price₹400
Commission (8%)-₹32
Fixed fee-₹15
Shipping-₹45
GST on fees (18%)-₹17
Settlement₹291

Product cost ₹180 plus ₹10 packaging leaves roughly ₹101 profit per delivered order, a 25% margin. Payments arrive on a 7-day cycle, the same as Meesho and better than Amazon's 14 days.

Commission varies enormously by category, from roughly 5% to 15% and beyond, and the difference between those two changes everything. Run your exact product through the free Flipkart fee calculator before you source stock.

Do not forget the return buffer

The worked example above is a delivered order. It is not your average order. Fashion returns run high on every Indian marketplace, and a return means no revenue plus reverse logistics cost. If you have come from Meesho, the mechanics will be familiar from Meesho return charges and RTO, and the principle transfers directly: your real profit per order is the delivered-order profit minus what returns cost you, and you must price for it before listing.

Where Flipkart wins and loses

Wins

  • Less crowded than Amazon in many fashion and home categories, so a new listing can actually rank
  • Strong tier-2 and tier-3 buyer base that trusts Flipkart over newer platforms
  • 7-day payments, which is friendly to cash flow
  • Big Billion Days, which drives enormous volume for sellers who prepare

Loses

  • Fee stack is heavier than Meesho on low-priced products
  • Fashion return rates are comparable to other platforms, so buffer your pricing
  • Buyer expectations are higher than on Meesho, and quality complaints hit your account metrics harder

Listing tips specific to Flipkart

  • Match the category precisely. Flipkart's category tree drives both your commission rate and your search placement. A miscategorised product pays the wrong fees and ranks nowhere.
  • Use every image slot. Listings with five or more images convert visibly better.
  • Fill every attribute field. Flipkart's filters for colour, fabric and occasion are how buyers narrow searches. Empty attributes mean you vanish from filtered results.
  • Watch your seller metrics. Cancellations and returns affect visibility. Never list stock you do not physically have.
  • Prepare for sale events. Big Billion Days participation needs stock and pricing planned weeks ahead, but the volume spike is real.

Comparing the three

Fee structures differ more than the marketing suggests, and the right first platform usually comes down to your price point. Meesho and Amazon are compared directly in Meesho vs Amazon for new sellers, and you can model all three on your own numbers with the free platform comparison tool.

FAQ

Can I sell on Flipkart without GST?

Only in GST-exempt categories. For regular products a GSTIN is mandatory, the same as Amazon. If you want to start selling without GST, Meesho is the only major platform that allows it, via an Enrolment ID.

Flipkart seller account kaise banaye?

seller.flipkart.com par jaakar mobile number se sign up karo, GSTIN daalo, pickup address aur bank details add karo, aur kam se kam ek product list karo. Account aam taur par ek se do din mein active ho jaata hai. Registration free hai.

What commission does Flipkart charge sellers?

It varies by category and price band, averaging around 8% but ranging from roughly 5% to over 15%. Check your exact category in the seller portal and model it in the Flipkart fee calculator.

Flipkart ya Meesho, kahan zyada profit hai?

Price point par depend karta hai. Roughly ₹400 se neeche Meesho ka 0% commission usually jeet jaata hai. Uske upar Flipkart ki buyer trust aur higher price tolerance zyada net de sakti hai. Apne asli numbers se dono compare karo.

How long does Flipkart seller registration take?

Usually one to two days once your documents verify. Delays are almost always a business name mismatch between your application and your GST certificate.

Can I sell on Flipkart and Meesho at the same time?

Yes, and you should. Same GSTIN, same products, multiple revenue streams. Just manage stock carefully so you never oversell on either platform. The same GSTIN also works for Amazon seller registration if you want all three.
