Yes, you can sell on Meesho without a GST number. Since October 2023 Meesho allows sellers to register with a free Enrolment ID (also called a UIN) from the government GST portal instead of a GSTIN, as long as you sell only within your own state, stay under the turnover limit, and stick to allowed categories. It is completely legal and it costs nothing. Here is exactly how it works, what you give up, and when you will still need a GSTIN.

What is an Enrolment ID?

An Enrolment ID is a temporary identification number the government's GST portal issues to small sellers who are not registered for GST. It exists precisely so small and home-based sellers can sell on ecommerce platforms legally without carrying a full GST registration. Getting one is free and takes a few minutes online.

The conditions, read these before you start

  1. Your own state only. With an Enrolment ID you can sell only within the state you registered in. A seller in Delhi can ship only to Delhi buyers. Interstate selling legally requires a GSTIN.
  2. Turnover under ₹40 lakh a year, or ₹20 lakh in special-category states. Cross it and GST registration becomes mandatory. Sellers on the Composition scheme, a simplified GST option, can go up to ₹1.5 crore.
  3. Allowed categories only. Everyday categories such as clothing, home decor and many lifestyle products can be sold without GST. Electronics and most cosmetics require a GSTIN. Meesho shows what your account is permitted to list.
  4. No GST on your invoices. You cannot charge or show GST to customers.
  5. Meesho monitors this. Cross the limits and you will be asked for a GSTIN, or the account can be suspended until you provide one.

If those conditions work for you, here is the process.

How to sell on Meesho without GST, step by step

  1. Get your Enrolment ID. Go to the official GST portal, choose the e-commerce seller enrolment option, and fill in your PAN, mobile, email and address. It is issued quickly and costs nothing. Save it somewhere safe.
  2. Go to supplier.meesho.com and click Start Selling. Sign up with your mobile number and email.
  3. Choose the No GST option when asked for tax details, and enter your Enrolment ID.
  4. Add your details. Store name, pickup address (this fixes your selling state) and bank account. Make sure the bank account name matches your PAN name exactly, because mismatches are the most common reason approvals get stuck.
  5. List your first products once approved, within the allowed categories, and start selling inside your state.

The whole setup, including catalog listing and your first orders, has a video walkthrough of the Supplier Panel inside the Meesho A-Z Course.

What you actually give up

Starting without GST is a genuinely good way to test selling. Low commitment, no compliance work, real learning. But two costs are easy to miss at the start.

You lose the rest of India. Your state is a fraction of Meesho's buyer base. If you are in a smaller state, this hurts a lot, and it caps your growth long before the turnover limit does.

You cannot claim input tax credit. GST-registered sellers claim back the 18% GST sitting inside their shipping charges and platform fees. Unregistered sellers absorb it. On a seller doing a few lakh in monthly sales, the ITC on shipping and fees alone typically works out to several thousand rupees a month, handed to the taxman instead of kept. The free Meesho profit calculator has a GST-registered toggle so you can see exactly what that difference looks like on your own product.

There is a third cost worth naming, because returns are where Meesho sellers lose money. An unregistered seller pays the 18% GST on reverse shipping too, with no way to claim it back. At roughly ₹153 a return, that adds up faster than most people expect. The full picture is in Meesho return charges and RTO.

My honest suggestion for anyone serious: test without GST if you want, but plan to register early. If you want it handled, we file GST registration for online sellers at ₹999 for proprietorships, filed within 24 hours, with the GSTIN typically arriving in three to seven working days.

What about Amazon and Flipkart?

Different story. Both require GST from your first sale in almost all categories, and there is no Enrolment ID route on either. This is exactly why so many beginners start on Meesho: it is the only major Indian marketplace where you can legally start without GST. If you are weighing platforms, start with how to sell on Meesho, then compare fees in the platform comparison tool.
