Amazon Seller Registration India 2026: Steps and Fees
By Vanshika - ecommerce seller & educator, @chitraabyvanshika (100,000+ followers)
To register as an Amazon India seller you need a GSTIN, PAN, a bank account and a pickup address. Sign up at sellercentral.amazon.in, enter your GST and PAN details, add bank and pickup information, and list one product. Most accounts go live within one to three days. Registration is free on the standard plan, and you then pay a referral fee averaging around 9%, a closing fee of around ₹10, weight handling of around ₹50, and 18% GST on all of it. Here is the full process.
Should you start on Amazon?
Amazon is the highest-trust marketplace in India. Buyers pay more, return less than on budget platforms, and a well-ranked listing can sell for years. The trade-off is more documentation, more fees and far more competition.
| Amazon | Flipkart | Meesho | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commission | Around 9% | Around 8% | 0% |
| GST needed to start | Yes | Yes | No, Enrolment ID works |
| Payment cycle | 14 days | 7 days | 7 days |
| Buyer price tolerance | High | Medium | Low |
| Competition | Very high | Moderate | High |
Most sellers I work with start on Meesho for cash flow and learning, then expand to Amazon once a product is proven. If you have no GSTIN yet, that path is effectively decided for you, because Meesho is the only major platform you can start on without GST.
What you need before you start
Unlike Meesho, Amazon requires GST for almost everything:
- GSTIN, mandatory for all taxable categories, which is nearly everything. No GSTIN yet? We handle GST registration for ₹999, or apply free on the government portal
- PAN card, personal or business
- Bank account with a cancelled cheque or statement
- Mobile number and email
- Address proof for your pickup location
Step-by-step registration
- Go to sellercentral.amazon.in and click Start Selling
- Sign in with, or create, an Amazon account. Use a fresh email dedicated to the business
- Enter your legal business name exactly as it appears on your GST certificate
- Verify your mobile with OTP
- Enter your GSTIN and PAN. Amazon verifies these automatically
- Add your pickup address, where couriers collect orders
- Choose your shipping method, covered below
- Add bank details for settlements
- Complete identity verification if prompted
- List your first product. The account activates once everything verifies
Most accounts go live within one to three days if documents match exactly. The number one cause of delay is a business name on the application that does not match the GST certificate letter for letter.
Amazon's fee stack, with real maths
Amazon's fees stack in layers, and 18% GST applies on all of them:
| Fee | What it is | Typical amount |
|---|---|---|
| Referral fee | Commission on sale price | Around 9% average, 2% to 17% by category |
| Closing fee | Fixed per-item fee | Around ₹10, varies by price band |
| Weight handling | Shipping through Amazon | Around ₹50 for the first 500g |
| GST on fees | 18% on all of the above | Around ₹19 in the example below |
Worked example on a product selling at ₹500:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Selling price | ₹500 |
| Referral fee (9%) | -₹45 |
| Closing fee | -₹10 |
| Weight handling | -₹50 |
| GST on fees (18%) | -₹19 |
| Settlement | ₹376 |
If the product costs ₹250 with ₹15 packaging, you net about ₹111 per delivered order, a 22% margin. Decent, but that is a delivered order and not your average order, so subtract a return buffer before you call it profit.
Fees vary enough by category and weight that guessing is gambling. Run your numbers in the free Amazon fee calculator, and compare against the other platforms in the platform comparison tool.
Settlement timing is roughly a 14-day cycle, slower than Meesho and Flipkart's 7 days. Plan your cash flow around it, because it is the single biggest practical difference for a small seller.
FBA vs Easy Ship vs Self-Ship
- FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon). You send stock to Amazon's warehouse and they store, pack, ship and handle returns. You get the Prime badge, which significantly lifts conversion, but you pay storage and fulfilment fees. Best once a product is proven.
- Easy Ship. You store and pack, Amazon's courier picks up. The sensible default for new sellers.
- Self-Ship. You handle everything including delivery. Only for special cases.
Start with Easy Ship. Move your best seller to FBA once it sells consistently, not before, because FBA storage fees on unsold stock are brutal.
Creating a listing that ranks
Amazon is a search engine. Listings rank on relevance and performance:
- Title. Brand, product, key attributes, size and colour. Use the words buyers actually type.
- Bullet points. Five bullets, each leading with a benefit and including searchable terms naturally.
- Images. 1000x1000px minimum so zoom activates, pure white main image, lifestyle shots after.
- Backend search terms. Fill them. Synonyms, Hinglish terms buyers use, related queries. This field is invisible to buyers and heavily used by the algorithm.
- Price competitively at launch. Early sales velocity drives ranking. A thin margin for two to three weeks beats a dead listing at full margin.
Mistakes that get new Amazon sellers stuck
- Mismatched documents. GST name not equal to application name means verification limbo.
- Ignoring category approval. Beauty, food and several others need extra approval. Check before you source stock.
- Pricing without the full fee stack. A 9% referral fee sounds small until closing fee, weight handling and GST stack on top.
- Buying reviews. Account suspension. Amazon's detection is good. Earn reviews through inserts asking for honest feedback.
- Letting inventory hit zero. Stock-outs kill ranking momentum that took weeks to build.
What it will cost you per order
Registration is free. Selling is not. Since March 2026 the referral fee is 0% on products up to ₹1,000, but the closing fee, weight handling fee and 18% GST on both still apply - the full stack with a worked example is in Amazon seller fees 2026, and the fulfilment choice is compared in FBA vs Easy Ship vs Self Ship.
FAQ
Can I sell on Amazon India without GST?
Only in GST-exempt categories such as certain books. For virtually all regular products a GSTIN is mandatory. If you want to start without GST, Meesho is the only major option, using an Enrolment ID.

sellercentral.amazon.in par jaakar Start Selling click karo, GSTIN aur PAN daalo, pickup address aur bank details add karo, aur ek product list karo. Documents sahi hue to account ek se teen din mein active ho jaata hai. Registration free hai.
How much does Amazon charge sellers in India?
No registration fee on the standard plan. Per order you pay a referral fee of roughly 2% to 17% depending on category, a closing fee, weight handling, plus 18% GST on those fees. Run exact numbers in the Amazon fee calculator.
Amazon ya Meesho, beginners ke liye kya better hai?
Dono alag game hain. Meesho: kam barriers, budget buyers, 0% commission, bina GST ke shuru kar sakte ho. Amazon: zyada trust, zyada price, lekin zyada fees aur competition. Bahut se sellers Meesho se shuru karke baad mein Amazon par jaate hain.
How long until my first sale on Amazon?
A well-optimised listing at a competitive launch price typically sees first sales within one to three weeks. Listings copied from competitors with stock photos and hopeful pricing often never sell at all.
Is FBA worth it for a new seller?
Not at the start. FBA storage fees on stock that does not move will hurt you badly. Prove the product on Easy Ship first, then move your consistent seller to FBA for the Prime badge.
