Amazon Seller Fees 2026: Is 0% Referral Really Free?
By Vanshika - ecommerce seller & educator, @chitraabyvanshika (100,000+ followers)
On 16 March 2026 Amazon India expanded its zero referral fee from products under ₹300 to products priced up to ₹1,000, across more than 1,800 categories - apparel, footwear, fashion jewellery, grocery, home décor, beauty, toys and kitchen among them.
That is a genuine change and a large one. It is also not the same as selling for free, and the gap between those two things is where new sellers lose money.
Three fees survive the referral change: the closing fee, the weight handling fee, and 18% GST on both. On a ₹299 t-shirt they come to roughly ₹40 before you have paid for the product itself.
What actually changed in March 2026
| Before 16 Mar 2026 | From 16 Mar 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Zero referral price cap | Mostly under ₹300 | Up to ₹1,000 in 1,800+ categories |
| Referral above ₹1,000 | Older category rates | Reduced in select high-demand categories |
| Easy Ship under ₹300 | Standard fees | ₹10 off weight handling, ₹5 off closing |
| Self-ship closing fee under ₹300 | ₹45 | ₹20 |
| Self-ship closing fee ₹300-500 | ₹35 | ₹26 |
Amazon published its own before-and-after examples. A ₹999 fashion jewellery set on Easy Ship went from about ₹324 in fees to ₹100. A ₹798 pair of earphones on FBA went from ₹248 to ₹109.
Those are real reductions. Note what they are not: zero.
The three fees that remain
1. Closing fee
A flat charge per order, set by price band and by how you fulfil. This is the fee most sellers forget, and it is the one that hurts cheap products most.
| Selling price | Easy Ship | FBA | Self Ship |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹0 - ₹250 | ₹5 | ₹25 | ₹7 |
| ₹251 - ₹500 | ₹9 | ₹28 | ₹20 |
| ₹501 - ₹1,000 | ₹30 | ₹40 | ₹36 |
| ₹1,001 - ₹5,000 | ₹50 | ₹65 | ₹55 |
| Above ₹5,000 | ₹65 | ₹80 | ₹70 |
Look at the ₹0-250 row. FBA costs ₹25 where Easy Ship costs ₹5 - five times as much, on the cheapest products. That single line decides the fulfilment choice for a lot of low-priced catalogs.
2. Weight handling fee
Charged when Amazon handles logistics, which means Easy Ship and FBA but not self-ship. It scales with weight and with distance.
| Weight | Local | Regional | National |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 500g | ₹29 | ₹44 | ₹65 |
| 500g - 1kg | ₹39 | ₹54 | ₹75 |
The volumetric trap. Amazon bills on whichever is higher: the actual weight, or the volumetric weight worked out from your box dimensions. A light but bulky parcel bills on its size. Slim packaging is the most reliable way to cut this fee, and it works on every order forever.
3. 18% GST on the fees
Every fee Amazon charges attracts 18% GST. If your closing and weight handling come to ₹200, you pay ₹236.
If you are GST registered this is claimable as input tax credit - which is one of the strongest arguments for registering. The mechanics are in GST for ecommerce sellers.
A worked example
A ₹299 t-shirt, Easy Ship, local delivery, under 500g, in a zero-referral category:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Selling price | ₹299 |
| Referral fee (0% under ₹1,000) | ₹0 |
| Closing fee | -₹9 |
| Weight handling (local, under 500g) | -₹29 |
| GST on fees (18%) | -₹7 |
| Settlement | ₹254 |
| Product cost | -₹150 |
| Packaging | -₹10 |
| Profit per delivered order | ₹94 |
That is a healthy-looking 31% margin - and it is still before returns.
₹45 in fees on a ₹299 product is 15% of the selling price, with a referral fee of exactly zero. The arithmetic only works because the sourcing cost is lean. Buy that t-shirt at ₹200 instead of ₹150 and the margin halves.
Where it stops working
Zero referral is most valuable on higher-priced items within the ₹1,000 cap, because the fixed fees are a smaller share of the sale.
On a ₹150 product, a ₹5 closing fee plus ₹29 weight handling plus GST is roughly ₹40 - around 27% of the selling price, before you have bought anything. No referral discount rescues that.
The practical read: the closer you sit to ₹1,000 without crossing it, the better this change treats you. Just above ₹1,000 the referral fee returns and the maths shifts sharply, so a product priced at ₹1,050 may settle worse than the same product at ₹990.

The fees people forget entirely
Returns. Amazon does not refund your original weight handling fee when a customer returns an item. The order is reversed; the logistics cost is not.
Storage, if you use FBA. Charged per cubic foot per month, and it rises in the October to December festive window. Slow-moving stock in an FBA warehouse quietly eats margin.
Removal fees, if you want unsold FBA stock back.
Ads. Optional, but most competitive categories are pay-to-play in practice.
Which fulfilment method suits you is a genuine decision with real money attached

FAQ
Does Amazon really charge 0% commission in 2026?
Zero referral fee on products priced up to ₹1,000 across more than 1,800 categories, since 16 March 2026. The closing fee, weight handling fee and 18% GST on both still apply, so a sale is never free.
Amazon seller charges kitna lagta hai?
What is the Amazon closing fee?
A flat per-order charge based on the price band and your fulfilment method. It ranges from about ₹5 on Easy Ship for cheap items to ₹80 on FBA for expensive ones. FBA closing fees are consistently the highest.
How is the weight handling fee calculated?
On whichever is higher - actual weight or volumetric weight from your box dimensions - and on the delivery zone. It applies to Easy Ship and FBA, not to self-shipped orders.
Do I pay GST on Amazon's fees?
Yes, 18% on every fee. If you are GST registered you can claim it as input tax credit, which is a real reason to register rather than sell on an unregistered basis.
Is Amazon cheaper than Meesho now?
On low-priced items Meesho is usually still cheaper, because Amazon's fixed fees bite hardest at low prices. Above a few hundred rupees the gap narrows a lot. The comparison is worked through in Meesho vs Amazon for new sellers.
Are these fee rates current?
They reflect the March 2026 structure as published. Amazon revises rates - check the fee schedule in Seller Central before pricing a new product.
