Meesho Shipping Charges and Volumetric Weight: Stop Paying for Air
By Vanshika - ecommerce seller & educator, @chitraabyvanshika (100,000+ followers)
Shipping on Meesho is charged by weight slab, and courier pricing uses chargeable weight: whichever is higher out of what the parcel weighs on a scale and what its size implies. A light product in a big box is billed on its size. That is why a 400 gram kurti packed in an oversized carton can cost as much to ship as a parcel three times heavier, on every single order.
The fix is almost always the box, not the product. This guide shows how the maths works, how to find out which slab your parcel really sits in, and the changes that move it down.
The formula: actual weight vs volumetric weight
Couriers in India work out volumetric weight like this:
Volumetric weight (kg) = Length x Width x Height (cm) / divisor
The divisor is usually 5000. Some couriers use 4000, which makes the same box count as heavier.
Then:
Chargeable weight = the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight
A worked example with a box many apparel sellers use:
| Value | |
|---|---|
| Box size | 30 x 25 x 8 cm |
| Volume | 6,000 cubic cm |
| Volumetric weight at divisor 5000 | 1.2 kg |
| Volumetric weight at divisor 4000 | 1.5 kg |
| What the packed kurti actually weighs | 420 g |
| What you can end up billed on | 1.2 to 1.5 kg |
The kurti did not get heavier. The box made it look heavy. You can run your own box in the free Meesho shipping calculator, which shows actual, volumetric and chargeable weight side by side and tells you how much is paid for empty space.
How this shows up on Meesho
When you list a product, Meesho shows the shipping charge it will deduct per order, based on the package details for that product. That number comes out of your settlement on every delivered order, and forward shipping is also lost again on returns, so it is the single biggest deduction for most sellers. The breakdown of every charge is in Meesho seller fees explained.
Two things follow from that:
- The weight and size you declare matter. Enter the packed parcel, not the bare product. Packaging, tape and the label all count.
- Your panel is the source of truth. Third-party rate tables, including the default ladder in our calculator, are a starting point. The shipping charge your own Supplier Panel shows for a product is the number to price against.
Declaring a parcel smaller or lighter than it really is will not save money. The courier still handles the real parcel, and mismatches cause disputes. The goal is a parcel that is genuinely smaller, not one that is described smaller.
Slabs are cliffs, not slopes
Shipping does not rise gram by gram. It rises in steps. Everything inside one slab costs the same, so:
- A parcel at 505 g can cost the same as one at 740 g, if both sit in the same band above 500 g.
- A parcel that is 20 g over a cut-off pays the full next slab.
- Shaving those 20 g drops it a whole slab, permanently, on every future order.
This is why the most valuable number is not your weight but your headroom: how far you are below the next cut-off. If you are only 30 or 40 grams under a line, a thicker polybag or a heavier tag can push the whole product into the next slab without you noticing. The shipping calculator flags this as "cutting it fine".
Five changes that drop a slab
1. Use a box that fits the product
Most sellers buy one carton size and use it for everything. Keep two or three sizes instead, and pack each product in the smallest one it fits without being crushed. For apparel, a well-fitted polybag often removes the box entirely.
2. Shrink the biggest dimension first
Volume is length times width times height, so cutting the largest side gives the biggest drop. Folding a garment once more to reduce the height of the parcel from 8 cm to 5 cm takes the 30 x 25 box above from 6,000 to 3,750 cubic cm.
3. Check the divisor your courier uses
At divisor 4000 a box counts 25% heavier than at 5000. You do not choose the courier on Meesho, so price for the less favourable case if your product is bulky and light.
4. Weigh the sealed parcel, not the product
Put the finished parcel on a kitchen scale, with the label on. Sellers routinely forget the box, the bubble wrap and the tape, and those grams are exactly what push a parcel over a line.
5. Do not over-protect what does not break
Clothes, bedsheets and soft goods do not need a corrugated box and filler. Fragile and liquid items do. Protect what needs protecting and nothing else.
What a slab saving is worth over a year
The saving on one order looks small. It is not small across a year, because it repeats on every order and on every return. A product shipping 300 orders a month that drops one slab saves that difference 3,600 times a year, before counting returns, where the forward shipping is lost a second time.
Run that number for your own product in the shipping calculator, which turns the per order saving into a monthly and yearly figure. Then put the new shipping figure into the Meesho price calculator: a cheaper slab often lets you list lower than competitors and still make more per order.
Things that do not reduce shipping
Changing photos or adding borders to catalog images. Some videos sell this as a trick. The parcel has not changed, so nothing real changes, and promotional graphics on catalog images break image guidelines.
Under-declaring the weight. Covered above. It creates disputes, not savings.
Switching to a cheaper but larger box. A box that costs a rupee less but moves you up a slab costs far more than a rupee on every order.
FAQ
How is Meesho shipping charge calculated?
Shipping is charged in weight slabs, and courier pricing uses chargeable weight, which is the higher of the parcel's actual weight and its volumetric weight. The exact charge for your product is shown in your Supplier Panel when you list it, and that is the figure to price against.
What is volumetric weight in simple words?
It is how heavy your parcel counts as, based on the space it takes in a courier van. Length times width times height in centimetres, divided by 5000 (sometimes 4000), gives the volumetric weight in kilograms.
Meesho shipping charges kaise kam kare?
Sabse pehle box chhota karo. Product ke hisaab se do ya teen size ke box ya polybag rakho, sabse badi side kam karo, aur packed parcel ka asli wazan tolo. Agar parcel slab ki line se thoda sa upar hai, to thoda sa wazan ya size kam karke poora slab neeche aa sakta hai.
Does Meesho charge shipping on returns too?
On a customer return you lose the forward shipping you already paid, and a reverse shipping fee also applies. That makes the forward slab doubly important. The full breakdown is in Meesho return charges and RTO.
Why does my shipping charge differ between two similar products?
Usually because their declared packages differ in weight or size, so they sit in different slabs. Check the package details you entered for each one.
Can I choose the courier on Meesho?
No. Meesho assigns the courier, which is why it is safest to price for the courier and divisor that would cost you the most.
