How to pick the right HSN code

Most sellers get this wrong in the same way: they search for the product the way a customer would shop for it. HSN does not work like that. It classifies by what the thing is made of and how it is made, which is why a knitted cotton t-shirt and a woven cotton shirt live under different headings even though they hang on the same rack.

When two codes both look right, the tie-breaker is usually the predominant material. A necklace that is mostly base metal with a little gold plating is imitation jewellery, not gold jewellery. A bag with a leather trim but a canvas body follows the canvas. Set the code once per product in your listing and your billing software, and you stop re-deciding it on every order.

For the rules around how many digits you must report, what a wrong code costs, and where the code goes on each marketplace, read HSN codes for ecommerce sellers. This page is the lookup tool; that article is the rulebook.

Once you have the code and rate, the GST calculator will add or remove GST from your price with the CGST/SGST split, and the profit calculators show what you actually keep after marketplace fees.

What the digits mean

An HSN code is read in pairs. Each pair narrows the classification, and how many pairs you report depends on your turnover.

The 2025 GST slab change

This is the reason so many HSN lists online are now wrong. If a page quotes a 12% or 28% rate, it has not been updated since September 2025.

Common questions

What is an HSN code?+

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is the product classification system India uses for GST. Every product maps to a code, and that code decides which GST rate applies on your invoice. The first 2 digits are the chapter, 4 digits the heading, 6 digits the international sub-heading, and 8 digits the India-specific tariff item.

How many digits of HSN do I need on my invoice?+

It depends on your turnover. Small sellers below the threshold generally report 4 digits, larger businesses report 6, and exports need the full 8. Check the current requirement for your turnover band on the GST portal, because these thresholds have been revised more than once.

Why does one product show more than one HSN code?+

Because classification follows material and construction, not the shopping category. A cotton t-shirt and a cotton shirt sit under different headings because one is knitted and one is woven. A bag of leather and a bag of plastic differ too. When two codes look plausible, the deciding factor is usually the predominant material.

Some websites show a different GST rate for the same code. Which is right?+

This happens more than people expect, especially for borderline categories. The only authority is the current CBIC rate notification - blogs and tools (including this one) are summaries and can lag behind a change. Where sources genuinely disagree, this tool says so instead of printing a confident number, and you should confirm before invoicing.

What changed in the GST slabs in 2025?+

From 22 September 2025 the 12% and 28% slabs were removed. Most items at 12% moved to 5% and most at 28% moved to 18%, while a 40% rate was introduced for luxury and sin goods such as tobacco and aerated drinks. Gold and precious stones kept their special 3% and 0.25% rates. Any HSN list published before that date is out of date.

Is a wrong HSN code actually a problem?+

Yes. The code drives the rate, so a wrong code means a wrong tax amount on the invoice - either you undercharge and owe the difference later, or you overcharge your buyer. Mismatches between your invoices and your returns are also a common trigger for notices, so it is worth setting the code correctly once per product rather than guessing per order.
